So it has come down to this poster! I just can't get over the bold colors and the way the poster flows. I am really proud of this poster child! I think the red really makes all of the features in the face pop and the black of the font makes the black of the glasses really pop. I will be interested to see how this will look printed and how the colors will translate.

Phrases
It's always hard for me to find the right words to use. And especially in this case for trying to find the right words to sum up my product that I am advertising. In the beginning I thought i'd want to put something at the top of the poster like "See The World Through Ray-Ban" or just "See The World". but then I received some feedback that "See The World" is too vague and since my glasses deal with New york City, I should focus more on the Big Apple itself. So I've been working on the following phrases:
"See New York City"
"Experience New York City"
"Travel With Ray-Ban"
"Bring Style To NYC"
"Study NYC"
"See New York City"
"Experience New York City"
"Travel With Ray-Ban"
"Bring Style To NYC"
"Study NYC"
My 5 (or so) Possible Poster Layouts
I've been playing around with Indesign and having too much fun! I need help figuring out which layout I should use. On the one hand I love the simplicity of just the plain red background, but on the other I also like the added detail of the real New York sub map as the background. I just can't decide if it makes the ad too visually busy.
This Is Colossal!!!

When one of my classmates saw my idea for my Ray-Ban advertisement which included not only a face but a drawing of a map as well, she told me about a blog that features a man who draws faces using the natural lines of a map. I looked it up and this guy does amazing work! I have loved looking through his work and this blog has served as a great deal of inspiration for me. I look forward to checking back to see new entries. Definitely go check this blog out! It's Colossal!!!

Poster Update
Ok! So i'm actually really pleased with how this poster rough draft came out! I figured since I really didn't know too much about the Adobe programs, i'd just try making something with my hands and the outcome is the poster that you now see. I really like how the face came out and I am seriously thinking about using it for my final design! My handwriting is a bit wacky so I don't think i'll stick with the handwritten font but this is definitely a good start!
Getting Sketchy!
So I did another try at drawing and I think I really like how this sketch came out. I'm kind of excited because I'm able to not only include the face that can be counted as a trademark of Ray-Ban ads but also the bright colors that I hope to add into the map that creates this mans face.
Inspiration
I've been trying to decide how I could incorporate Ray-Ban tradition into my own logo and while looking through Ray-Ban advertisements I came to the conclusion that a lot of Ray-Ban ads feature not only bright colors but faces. Ray-Ban ads are to say the least very eye-catching to say the least, not only for their color choices but for the personal feel the viewers get from the individual faces that are featured in a majority of their ad. I think that these nameless faces help make the viewers fell like Ray-Bans are a product not just for a minority but for everybody. I'd like to be able to involve that same feel in my own add just with my own personal twist on it.
Beginning Poster Ideas
These are just some quick images I put together to help me decide what direction I want to go with on my poster. I really like the idea of making the background something to do with New York City since my glasses are based so greatly on the city, but I can't decide just how to do it.
Color Police
This magazine cover uses poor color choice. The use of soft colors like pink and white is overdone and information is lost or hard to understand because of it. Because of all of the crazy detail and over abundance of different shades of red and pink, the white font of the words on the cover are lost and very hard to read. Also, all of the soft colors make the cover seem a bit bland.
This cover too, also uses a bad choice of color. Because both the back drop and the models clothing and the props are all the same red, it makes it very difficult to understand what exactly the purpose of this cover is. Also the boldness of the red makes the white words fall behind and hard to read.
This advertisement uses color is a useful and constructive way. Because of the boldness in some areas and the blandness in others, the viewer can easily understand what is being advertised. The bright popping red of the car makes it stand out against the white walls and makes it clear that the car is indeed the subject and purpose of the advertisement.
Drawing Practice
I've been trying to get to know my Ray-Bans a little better. I have had these glasses for years and have never noticed as many details in them as I have these past couple of days. I have been trying to draw different shapes and forms of these sunglasses, just for practice, so that I may be able to know the map on the inside of the frame more (end enhance my normal stick-figure quality drawings). They have been fun but difficult for me to draw but they've been good practice for not only noticing the small details in design but my drawing class as well. That's a bonus!
My Well-Designed Object of Choice Is...
My Ray-Bans! I love these sunglasses. They are sleek and simple but the detail on the inside of the frame gives them so much personality. The contrast between the black outside of the frame and the colorful map on the inside makes them very interesting without over-doing it.
My 5 Well-Designed Objects
These are my five products that I find well-designed. I chose the hair clip because of it's lines and delicate features. I chose the glasses because of the smooth, clean feeling to them as well as the choice of color. I chose the keychain because of it's many textures. I also like the keychain because of the antique feel it has. I chose the EatNTool because of it's usefulness. Even though it is simply designed and not very flashy, this tool can be used and helpful in numerous ways. Finally I chose the lamp because it is able to be simple without being boring. The slight curves add style without making it boisterous and too visually loud.

Dieter Rams: 10 Principles for Good Design, Evaluation
Before when I would look at objects that I found appealing I would not think about what made them appealing to me. It would just be an instant snap in my head and I would know that I liked a certain aspect of the product and that I would want to collect that item and be able to make it mine. After reading through Dieter Rams, Ten Principles For A Good Design, I can now more thoroughly evaluate what exactly makes a product pop in a viewers mind. I can now more easily realize the exact part of a product that I enjoy. Through innovation, usefulness, aesthetics, understandability, unobtrusiveness, honesty, durability, detail, eco-friendliness, and simplicity, a product can be made beautiful. Now not all products will contain greatness in all ten of these factors. but it is the attention you pay to the factors you choose when making a product that will truly make that object beautiful and well designed.
